Abstract

Dental caries is developed by acids produced by oral microorganisms, especially streptococcus mutans. In order to investigate the mechanism of decalcification, the authors had analyzed the effect of oral microorganism and sugar on dental caries.
The effects of radio-isotoped sucrose ((U-14C)sucrose) and metabolite of streptococcus mutans 10449C on decalcification of hydroxylapatite by using liquid scintillation counter was experimented. And also, the decalcified calcium ion concentration produced by oral microorganism was measured by using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The obtained results were as follows:
1. Oral streptococcus mutans seemed to develop decalcification by producing lactic acid from sucrose.
2. The decalcified calcium ion concentration from hydroxylapatite by streptococcus mutans was increased by concentration of sucrose and time.
3. It see that atomic absorption spectroscopy could be used accurately for studying the decalcification mechanism.
